Jewish Press June 24: Mr. Obama has come under increasing criticism for his tepid response to the violence. It took him eight days to issue a clear statement of support for the millions of people demonstrating throughout Iran, at obvious risk to their lives. On Sunday he warned Ayatollah Khamenei and President Ahmadinejad that "the world is watching. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion."
Jewish Press June 24: President Obama is caught on the horns of a major dilemma. Yes, he has to take care not to be seen as interfering in the internal affairs of another country. But the violent reaction of the Iranian authorities to the demonstrators shows what they are capable of and that they question their hold on the support of the majority of Iranians. Why else would they feel the need to clamp down to suppress the protests?
Jewish Press June 24: Mr. Obama has long said he wants to end what he's characterized as cynical and unprincipled policies pursued by previous administrations. It would behoove him, then, to go beyond merely deploring the violence. Simple rhetoric means nothing to the mullahs who doubtless now see themselves in a life and death struggle to maintain their power. But a foursquare expression of support for the demonstrators might encourage even more Iranians to join the masses of their countrymen already on the ramparts.[1]
